The inaugural vintage at Picardy produced a single Pinot Noir. With each passing year Picardy evolves into an even more dramatic expression of Pemberton's answer to Burgundy. The mix of clones has infused greater interest in the wine, showing greater texture, structure and complexity. A light to medium bodied effort with the presence and taste of a top end Cote-d'Or, Picardy would have to be one of the finest Pinot Noir in the new world. An alluring wine that's almost too easy to drink, its finely grained tannins making it completely approachable while young.

The story of Stonewell began when Peter Lehmann decided to make a special Shiraz of immense intensity and muscularity that would demand time in the barrel and bottle before release, named after the district that best showed the characters he admired most in Barossa Shiraz.

Stonewell is the very best of vintage, one of the new world's great Shiraz. A powerful, stately wine, Stonewell is the jewel in the crown of Peter Lehmann's most spectacular efforts, the grapes are drawn from the lowest yielding, old vine blocks in all Barossa Valley. Some planted well over a century ago, produce frugal bunches with parched berries, precious little black gems which are at the heart of Stonewell Shiraz. A wine of great intensity and refined muscularity, which demands time under the Lehmann estate cellars before release.

The 1999 is a stepping-stone on the long pathway of Petaluma's success at crafting the ultimate Coonawarra Merlot. The paradox of supreme quality is always how to achieve in the vineyard, concentration and structure without sacrificing the finesse which is a hallmark of the world's best Merlot. Coonawarra's innate suitability for this varietal, and Petaluma's distinguished sites, offer a mosaic which maximises the quality of this exceptional wine.

One of Australia's most revered red wines, vinified from a backbone of superlative fruit grown to the eminent Len Evans and Sharefarmer Vineyards at the heart of Coonawarra's cigar shaped strip of precious Terra rossa soils. Petaluma employs hand pruning and hand picking, foreign practices in Coonawarra, for an enduring red blend that's now an iconic Australian wine and regional benchmark.

Established by industry doyen Len Evans, the Petaluma vineyards are at the very heart of Coonawarra, invaluable winegrowing terroirs which are infused by the mineral rich terra rosa soils and stimulated by the balmy maritime breezes of the Southern Ocean. A superior vineyard wine from the twelve finest rows of Shiraz, planted 1991 to clone 654, at the highest elevations of the original Penny's Hill block. Remarkably pure in its eloquence and expression of terroir, voluptuously proportioned, full bodied and exquisitely balanced, a McLaren Vale icon, the articulation of a sensational vineyard, as crafted by the master winemaking team at Penny's Hill.

This enduring flagship wine can boast twenty trophys and over seventy gold medals throughout its illustrious history. Penley Steyning captures and enhances the excellence in first growth Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, highlighted by rich berry tones, superior length and layers of intense flavour, a wine which achieves perfect harmony between massive intensity of fruit, mouth filling grape tannins and elegant acids. The extended time in new French oak is a key factor to the integration and development. Flavour, depth and length dominate the style.

Excellent Langtons Classification. St Henri stands out as one of the most internationally successful Australian icon wines, year in and year out, it serves to uphold the integrity and regal nature of the Penfolds brand. Always an expression of the finest South Australian Shiraz without the distraction of oak, a minor component of Cabernet, can in some years be assembled into the final wine, contributing structure, firmer tannins and complexity.

Outstanding Langtons Classification. Notwithstanding it's stately ranking in the pantheon of enduring Penfold wines, St Henri is remarkably approachable upon release, it remains accessible to most red wine enthusiasts in terms of drinkability and pecuniary value. St Henri's style is essentially fruit forward, the time spent ageing in an ancient collection of oversize, well used 1460 litre oak vats softens the tannins without infusing the wine with any obvious oak character. An Australian classic to savour alongside roast rack with root vegetable and sea parsley.

Outstanding Langtons Classification. St Henri was originally modelled after a wine made at a local Adelaide Hills estate named Auldana, eventually acquired by Penfolds. The resident winemaker was married to a Henrietta and his son's name was Henri. Penfold's chief winemaker John Davoren's devoted work with St. Henri set new standards in Barossa reds. St. Henri has long established itself as an elegant, perfumed style based on exemplary fruit definition delicately backed by supple background oak, a modern St Henri classic.

Outstanding Langtons Classification. Originally labelled as claret and sold at the same price as Grange, St Henri was more often than not, the preferred choice of Shiraz for the nascent Australian market. Gaining a new lease on life during the 1990s as the quality and style continued to make converts, St Henri remains the nation's most accessible icon Shiraz. Aged in a collection of very old and evolved 1460 litres oak vats, the raw St Henri flourishes into a complex fruit forward wine with supple tannins and a whisper of oak, Australian Shiraz unlike any other.

Penfolds St. Henri is a counterpoint to Grange, being a highly successful, alternative expression of Shiraz that's unfettered by oak. St. Henri continues to deliver fundamentally superior quality wines of great breeding and unmatchable value, a unanimously appealing perfumed style based on fruit definition and seasoned oak. A classy and compelling wine when young, St Henri exhibits the timeless characters of historically classic vintages. Now formative and youthful, it is already completely integrated, with the potential to be a complex, long lived red.

RWT stands for Red Winemaking Trial, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began on a campaign to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest level. Penfolds have sourced parcels of the most transcendent fruit from dedicated Barossa growers, chosen on the basis of aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than intensity or power. Since inaugural vintage, collectors have recognised the sheer class of RWT, already the wine has a strong secondary market following, illustrating its collectability and cellaring potential.

RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak. The initials RWT stand for Red Winemaking Trial, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in 1995, naturally now no longer a trial. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than sheer intensity or power of flavour.

The development of Penfolds Red Winemaking Trial reflects extraordinary progress in viticulture and winemaking. The two disciplines are increasingly intertwined, as growers and winemakers work together in search of optimum balance, ripeness and flavour. RWT draws fruit from 20 to 100 year-old vineyards arcing across the west and north-west of the Barossa, mostly independently grown. A seductive style from the best vineyards showing voluptuous intensity, ripe tannins, and juicy plum/blueberry flavours underpinned by savoury French oak.

The Red Winemaking Trial presents an alternative to the multi-regional, American oak style of Shiraz which are the hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, a pure Barossa wine aged exclusively in French barriques. In contrast to the muscular and assertive Grange, it's style is opulent and fleshy, a wine which redefines Barossa Shiraz at the very highest level.

Magill Estate Shiraz is a very important Penfolds single vineyard wine. It is of great symbolic importance, from fruit grown to the remaining original vineyard (5.2 ha) and crafted at the original Penfolds winery at Magill, established 1844 in Adelaide's eastern suburbs. First produced in 1983, Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz is an elegant, medium-weight style with velvety texture and fine tannins, matured in both French and American oak. It is a sleek, contemporary wine, yet crafted in the old fashioned way in the 120+ year old winery.

Magill Shiraz is a very important Penfolds single vineyard wine of great symbolic importance, the only current edition from the remaining original vineyard at the historic Estate. An elegant, medium-weight style with velvety texture and fine tannins, matured in both new French and American oak, it is a sleek, contemporary Shiraz, yet crafted in the old-fashioned way at the ancient wineworks. Hand-picked, vinified in open fermenters and then basket pressed, Penfolds Magill is an exclusive Adelaide Hills Shiraz from a grand and historical monopole.

The Magill Estate style has evolved over the years. While the early vintages were quite lean and tight, the recent releases have shown much greater fruit definition and palate vitality. The winemakers paid particular attention to flavour development and tannin ripeness for this Magill, and this release triumphs in a show of supple structures and more fruit richness. The aim of Penfolds Senior Winemaker Peter Gago in crafting Magill is to create a wine which expressess the character of the vineyard, and is more elegant in style than most Penfolds reds.

Labelled very plainly as Penfolds Claret, Grange Hermitage 1967 claimed the seventh Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for best one year old red in the land. 1965 Grange had already claimed the same accolade two years previously. Individual bottles of vintage 1967 may be labelled as Bin 74 or Bin 95. Max Schubert describes vintage 1967 as sweet, complex and intense, stocky /truffle like. Developed with ripe, concentrated, meaty chocolate flavours, silky tannin structure and long, well balanced finish.

Grange combines the intensity and stature of peerless quality new world Shiraz, with the complementary influence of completely new, fine American oak. Grange 1965, plainly labelled as Penfolds Claret, claimed the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy, Australia's highest and most distinguished accolade. Vintage 1965 continued to amass conspicuous wine show awards well into the 1970s. Bottles were marked with Bin numbers 69 and 70, 71 and 95. A very autumnal style of Grange, seasoned with intriguing mushroom notes, cedar and pastoral leaf.

The 1989 Grange Hermitage is beginning to show some seriously attractive older maturation characters, developing sooner by comparison to its more robust 1988 and 1990 counterparts. 91% Shiraz 9% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, as well as the McLaren Vale, it has the typical solid structure and strength of character to produce another classic Grange.

The hallmark of this release is powerful fruit intensity, superb length and typical Grange complexity, showing integrated fruit and oak flavours which are very persistent, reflecting the exceptional quality of the 1988 vintage. An ideal growing season followed by a warm dry vintage, produced an elegant Grange. 94% Shiraz, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon from Kalimna and other vineyards in the Barossa, Padthaway and McLaren Vale. A classic Grange, from an outstanding vintage year, the 1988 will develop superbly until 2008 and beyond.

The pinnacle of Australian wines, Grange is always exciting and opulent.

A very great Grange, the mild and relatively dry growing season lead to a very successful vintage. This was the final release crafted by Max Schubert's successor Don Ditter.

The unique and distinctive Grange style is based on ripe Shiraz fruit and stylish American oak in fine harmony. The 1985 Grange is predominantly Shiraz with a small amount (1%) Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the Kalimna and other superior vineyards in the Barossa, Clare Valley and Modbury (Adelaide Plains). A cool to mild growing season followed by similarly good conditions at vintage, with late rain delaying picking. An elegantly structured vintage with blackberry black olive plum flavours, and firm savoury tannins.

A meticulous regimen for vineyard selection, coupled with exacting winecraft, ensures each vintage of Grange displays a different character.

The 1983 Grange is one of the grandest ever, an exceptional wine and a standout edition from what was otherwise a disastrous vintage across most of Australia's winegrowing regions. Fires, hail, drought and heat, it all happened in 1983. Somehow Penfolds seemed to rise above the adversities of the vintage and produced monumental flagship wines. This Grange stands muscular, powerfully constructed and robust, one of the finest Granges of all time, a great Australian Shiraz with a claim to being one of the finest ever.

Intensely spicy, raspberried, honeyed wine – incredibly fragrant – with cedar and cranberry scents frollicking throughout. These characteristics work better on the nose than they do in the mouth, yet still it's as long and impressive as a freight train. Some will love this wine's fleshy, warm sweetness, others may find it too oddball – but it's in fine balance.

Winemaker John Duval called the 1981 a big, tannic Grange. It is just that, a very powerful, inky, purple-colored wine that is still almost primary and unevolved in its surprising youthfulness. This formidably endowed, broodingly backward, thick, full-bodied, muscular wine has a boatload of chocolate-infused plum, caramel, and cassis flavors. With high tannin, huge grip, and some propensity toward austerity, this is a monster Grange that may not totally assimilate the high levels of tannin, but there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about its future.

A fabulous Grange, powerful, seamlessly constructed wine with perfect levels of glycerin and extract. The wine still seems very youthful, made in a very voluptuous, blockbuster Grange style. It is just now reaching its plateau of drinkability.

Memorable for being the last of all vintages to be bottled in the original buff white foil capsules, the first edition to be made available in magnums, nowadays there are usually six hundred magnums of Grange bottled each year. Winemaker Don Ditter describes 1979 as complex, with plenty of soft, slightly lifted tobacco, berry gamey fruit fragrances. A highly concentrated palate with rich, cedar blackberry fruit, firm and massive, all supported by dry tannins before a long flavourful finish.

The 1960 to 1977 editions of Grange Hermitage were regularly entered into Australian Wine Shows with considerable success. Max Schubert retired as chief winemaker in 1973, but remained involved as mentor and Winemaker Emeritus for another twenty years. Schubert described 1977 Grange as "Complex and vibrant, sweet, meaty truffly fruit with perfumed apricot marmalade and black fruit notes. Concentrated and textured with sweet, briary, apricot, star anise. Fine dry tannins and excellent length. A remarkable wine!"

Tastings in September 1999 confirmed that the sheer intensity, power and overall balance of 1976 Grange meant it deserved its place as one of the great vintages of the 1970s.
